SPSC Web Site Launched!

On February 22 the SPSC launched its web site at www.softwareprofessionals.ca . The site provides access to a variety of services categorized under four headings.

Community services include a forum by which people may comment on issues and topics relevant to people in the software industry. The Member Directory is a tool to help people network with former co-workers or classmates.

Knowledge services include our Technical Quick Reference guides. These are designed to assist developers who need to a working understanding of a technology in a short amount of time or want to quickly refresh their knowledge on a technology.

The SPSC provides resources specific to Software Developers and Product Managers. Resources for Quality Assurance and Technical Writers targeted for the future.

Our Employer Directory takes a different approach to helping people find jobs. This service is designed to allow software professionals to research local companies that fit their interests and skills. The directory may also be used when deciding what new skills to learn in order to become more marketable based on what the employers are using and looking for. The directory also assists in finding out if anyone you know is currently working at that employer.

Many people in the software industry are self employed. The Entrepreneurship services will provide useful resources for moving into contract work or starting your own business. These services will be available in the near future. The SPSC will also be looking at group benefits for members that would otherwise not have dental or similar plans.

Showcase Your Talents!

The SPSC is an open association that operates through many working groups. All of our services and resources are a result of participation from interested members with a passion for making a difference. Being part of a SPSC Working Group is a very rewarding experience and allows you to be recognized for your talents.

Canada's Software Industry In Crisis?

The Ottawa Citizen printed an article on February 17 (D-1) with the caption "The End of Software". The crisis is centered on software development being moved offshore from North America and reduced to "pell mell development" lacking innovation and often not being trusted by customers. The SPSC hopes to take part in addressing this crisis by helping the people that make software be more competitive by being more knowledgeable, better connected and having higher standards than offshore developers. We want our people to be the best software professionals in the world.
